Another view is this: Don't be too quick to jump in and spend a lot of time trying to figure out someone's problem as soon as they report it. Ask (simple to ask) questions, and let them spend the time describing the problem completely. It is often the case that by forcing the user to describe the problem, they will think about it more and come up with the answers themselves.

As I've also said, when the bozo factor is high, let the project leader be the first line of defense, and don't hurry. A long turnaround time also encourages people to think/act on their own ...

Look at what really goes on, that you don't find out unless you force people to speak up.

The XXX guy is getting stuff ready for a *seminar* apparently a month from now, that they *plan* to write a paper about some day, while the YYY people have a SIGCOMM deadline on Wednesday.

Entirely incomparable.

Don't believe the importance of people's deadlines until they give you specific info.
